Carpenters Shipping: Bridging Asia and Papua New Guinea

Since its first voyage back in 2010, Carpenters Shipping has made Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, their primary focus. Despite a few changes to Carpenters Shipping’s service structure over the years, that focus (on Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu) did not change.

mv Carpenters Sirius in Westport, Port Klang recently

A wholly owned subsidiary of MBf Holdings, Carpenters Shipping operates shipping service into 4 main ports in Papua New Guinea, namely:

  • Motukea (Port Moresby)
  • Lae
  • Rabaul and
  • Madang

Carpenters Shipping bridges Papua New Guinea (PNG) with Far East ports, South East Asian port and India Sub Continent ports. Among the ports covered are (but not limited to):

  • Far East: Shanghai, Xiamen, Nansha, Huangpu, Qingdao, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Kaoshiung, Keelung
  • South East Asia: Manila, Ho Chi Minh, Bangkok, Laem Chabang, Singapore, Port Klang, Penang, Pasir Gudang, Jakarta, Surabaya and Belawan
  • India Sub continent: Mumbai, Chennai, Chittagong, Karachi and Colombo.

A combination of break bulk and containerised cargo from Asia to Papua New Guinea by Carpenters Shipping

Specific to South East Asia ports, Carpenters Shipping connect Papua New Guinea via 2 services, i.e. SEA and NSS. Both the service combines to provide an 11 day service frequency from South East Asia base ports, Port Klang, Singapore and Jakarta.

Cargo from other ports, such as Penang, Pasir Gudang, Ho Chi Minh, Belawan, Surabaya, Jakarta, Laem Chabang, Chittagong, Mumbai etc, is transshipped via Port Klang or Singapore into Papua New Guinea.

Transit time from Port Klang to Motukea (Port Moresby) is estimated to be 17 days, Lae (15 to 19 days), Rabaul (29 days) and Madang (32 days). Both breakbulk and containerized cargo is accepted on the service. Vessels deployed for the service are all self-geared and tweendeckers.

The service is supported by Carpenters Shipping’s own agency network in Port Moresby, Lae and Rabaul, set up in 2012.

Carpenters Shipping service changes: South East Asia Service (SEA) to Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Solomon Islands (SB)

On 14th May, 2020, MBf Carpenters Shipping Limited announced service change to their current schedule as below:

//start//

Ho Chi Minh and Sri Racha call will be removed from the service.

All cargoes will be feedered to Singapore and/or Port Klang for transhipment. This will provide a significant increase in frequency for customers exporting out from Vietnam and Thailand.

Due to changing trends, Jurong port call will be discontinued on SEA service. All breakbulk cargoes will be redirected to our NSS service (for PNG) or to be loaded out from Port Klang (for SB).

The service will call Port Klang prior to Singapore before heading to Lae and Honiara. Madang will now be serviced on our NSS service. This is to ensure a better service and schedule integrity on both SEA and NSS service.

These changes will be reflected in our next schedule to be release later this week.

//end//

Amendment of Custom Tariff Rate in Papua New Guinea 2018

There has been significant concerns raised by PNG manufacturers on the stiff competition coming from imported goods. Hence, the Government in an effort to support local manufacturers increased import tariffs on certain tariff items. This Bill is expected to reduce health related issues, enable local manufacturers to compete with foreign manufacturers, increase economic activities and create employment for the local.

These amendments have a significant impact on the import and export markets of PNG. Hence for people who intend to conduct business activities in Papua New Guinea is recommended to visit the official PNG government website.

Details information available :  http://www.treasury.gov.pg/html/national_budget/files/2018/Tax%20Bill/Customs%20Tariff%20(2018%20Budget)%20Bill%202017%20.pdf
